I use NovaBackup 10.3 on Windows XP Pro to backup data to a local external HD. This works fine. I would also like to do remote backup to protect my data in case of a fire, etc. here. I tried Steelgate, one of the remote storage vendors you suggest, but found that the remote backup was interfering with my local backup. That is, if I do a FULL backup to the Steelgate system Novabackup resets the Archive flag and my next local DIFFERENTIAL backup thinks that file does not need to be backed up.
As an alternative to buying space from Steelgate, I could use FTP to backup to space I have already purchased on the server that hosts my web site. But then I think I will lose the technology used by Steelgate and perhaps others that tells Novabackup to send only the changes in a file, instead of the whole file, if it has been modified since the last backup.
So, how do I use remote backup without having it interfere with my local backups?

The only offsite backup device that will not directly affect you and your local backups is xSP. This is the service provider solution that allows you to backup data to one of our resellers data centers. xSP will not be affected by local backups because it goes solely off of the modified date and not archive flag like that of the local backup solutions and also to FTP and DigiData devices.

To be clear, you want to do your local backup first, and then your online/remote backup afterwards.

| Nate, Does this mean that even though the xSP device doesn't use the A-bit in determine file selection it still clears the A-bit after backing up a file ? What about in Ver 11 ? To completely avoid conficts with local backups the xSP device should neither use the A-bit nor modify it. Cheers, Steve.
